La 3e Conférence sur les Systèmes bio-informatiques ouverts se tiendra à Edmonton, Canada, les 1er et 2 août 2002.
Les Systèmes bio-informatiques ouverts visent à rassembler des projets de recherche en génomique, protéomique et autres domaines de la bio-informatique acceptant de publier leurs outils de recherche, résultats et procédures sur le web. Leur objectif est d'échapper aux restrictions propriétaires des entreprises privées et de rassembler des chercheurs éventuellement dispersés géographiquement. La démarche s'apparente à celle qui a fait le succès des logiciels ouverts, dont LINUX (voir notre article) et de la Open Source Foundation. Elle nous paraît pouvoir être reprise dans un certain nombre de domaines intéressant l'informatique et l'Intelligence Artificielle.  

Ces actions sont soutenues par l'Open Bioinformatics Foundation, et ont pris leur développement à la suite du Projet BioPerl lancé en 1995. Celui-ci se présente ainsi: "Officially organized in 1995 and existing informally for several years prior, The Bioperl Project is an international association of developers of open source Perl tools for bioinformatics, genomics and life science research. Facilitated by the Open Bioinformatics Foundation we work closely with our friends and colleagues across many projects including biojava.org, biopython.org, DAS, bioruby.org, biocorba.org, ENSEMBL and EMBOSS.
The Bioperl server provides an online resource for modules, scripts, and web links for developers of Perl-based software for life science research. We can also provide web, FTP and CVS space for individuals and organizations wishing to distribute or otherwise make freely available standalone scripts & code".
